Fremont, CA — The Butte College Roadrunners opened their 2025 season with a tri-match at Ohlone College, securing a dramatic five-set victory over the Mendocino College Eagles before falling to the host Ohlone Renegades.
In their first match of the day, the Roadrunners went the distance against the Eagles. After taking the first two sets with scores of 25-16 and 25-19, Butte faced a comeback from Mendocino, who rallied to win the next two sets 25-21 and 25-18. The Roadrunners regrouped in the decisive fifth set, dominating with a 15-6 score to clinch the 3-2 victory.
First-year outside hitter Caoilfhionn Logan had an explosive debut, leading all scorers with 30 total kills for the day. She was particularly dominant against Mendocino, accounting for 24 of her kills in the five-set win. Another newcomer, Freshman Ella Hart, was highly efficient on offense, recording 14 kills on 30 attempts and a combined .400 hitting percentage across both matches. On the serving line, freshman Lilian Burger was flawless, leading the team with 8 aces and committing zero serving errors. In their second match of the day, the Roadrunners were swept by Ohlone College 3-0, with set scores of 25-21, 25-15, and 25-16.
The Roadrunners will now embark on a three-match road trip, starting with a contest at Sacramento City College on Wednesday, August 27th. They will then travel to Monterey, CA, to compete against Monterey Peninsula College on Thursday, August 28th, followed by a match against San Jose City College on Friday, August 29th, with both matches taking place at Monterey Peninsula College.
