MONTEREY, CA – The Butte College Roadrunners volleyball team had a mixed showing this week, facing the Monterey Peninsula Lobos on Thursday, August 28th, before defeating the San Jose City College Jaguars on Friday, August 29th.
On Thursday, the Roadrunners fell to the host Lobos in straight sets with scores of 25-15, 25-11, and 25-22.
The team rebounded the next day, securing a decisive 3-0 victory against the Jaguars with set scores of 25-19, 25-22, and 25-21. Butte's serving game was a major factor in the win, as they recorded an impressive 18 aces over the two matches, with 16 of those coming in the victory over San Jose. Freshman setter Taryn Cleek led the team with five aces.
Offensively, three Roadrunners scored double-digit kills: sophomore outside hitter Connie Huttman (14), first-year outside hitter Caoilfhionn Logan (14), and Ella Hart (10). On defense, sophomore libero Maddi Rogers led all players with 24 digs.
"We learned a lot from our first match and were able to make some key adjustments," said Head Coach Ed Jackson. "I'm really proud of how the team responded against San Jose. Our serving was fantastic and we showed a lot of resilience."
The Roadrunners will now host their first home match of the season next week when they take on the Yuba City College 49ers. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, September 3rd at 6:00 pm at the Cowan Gymnasium at the Main Campus of Butte College.
