Roadrunners Advance with 60–48 Win Over San Jose City in 3C2A NorCal Round 2
Butte College 60, San Jose City College 48
February 28, 2026
Butte College advanced in the 3C2A Northern California Regional Playoffs with a commanding 60-48 victory over San Jose City College on Saturday night, earning a spot in the regional finals.
The matchup marked the second meeting between the two programs this season, with the Roadrunners having previously secured a 66-57 win in San Jose back on November 22. Saturday's postseason showdown once again belonged to Butte, as the Roadrunners controlled the tempo from start to finish.
All-State Players Showdown
Both teams leaned heavily on their Al--State Players. San Jose City's 3rd Team Synise Byrd battled her way to 20 points, shooting 7-of-16 from the field and 1st team All-State player Haley Johnson was held to 6-13 from thew floor, 1 rebound and 4 turnovers, and both largely kept in check by a disciplined Butte defense that limited clean looks throughout the night.
Butte's 2nd Team All-State Marissa Elizalde delivered a stellar postseason performance, pouring in 27 points on an efficient 11-of-16 shooting, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. She also dished out six assists, orchestrating the Roadrunners' offense with poise and control.
Elizalde received strong support from her teammates:
- Brook Marr added 15 points on a blistering 7-of-9 shooting night.
- Mia Reyes chipped in 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds, helping Butte dominate the glass.
Defensive Control & Rebounding Edge
The Roadrunners' defense proved to be the difference. Butte held the Jaguars to just 18-of-49 shooting from the field, while converting 25 field goals of their own at a 49% clip. On the boards, Butte asserted itself with a decisive 37-24 rebounding advantage.
Despite committing 19 turnovers — their biggest flaw of the evening — the Roadrunners never relinquished control in the 2nd half.
Strong First Half Sets the Tone
Butte built a 30-21 lead at halftime and extended its advantage to its largest margin midway through the third quarter. From there, the Roadrunners maintained their composure and closed out the playoff victory in convincing fashion.
Up Next: Regional Final Showdown
Butte now travels to Oakland, CA to face Laney College, a familiar foe. The Eagles handed the Roadrunners a 72-69 overtime loss in the finals of the College of the Sequoias Tournament earlier this season.
The winner of the March 7 matchup will punch their ticket to the 3C2A Women's Basketball State Championship in Visalia, CA, hosted at College of the Sequoias.
With momentum on their side and balanced scoring fueling their run, the Roadrunners are one win away from making the 3C2A State Championships.
